Announced today at the District Conference Rotary E-Club of Greater South Oz to bring together remote members online - By Tim Jeanes  (ABC News)
Rotary is setting up a new online club exclusively for members which it says should be particularly relevant to remote areas.
The Rotary E-Club of Greater South Oz will be launched in Port Lincoln today.
District Governor for Rotary District 9500, John Campbell, covers South Australia and parts of the Northern Territory and Victoria. 'He said the new club would be particularly relevant for people in remote regions'.
"People rather than meeting at a club over a meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner face-to-face, they'll actually be meeting over the internet at a time that suits them," he said.  "They'll be able to log onto the club's e-site and be able to communicate, listen to speakers that have already been prerecorded and participate that way."
Mr Campbell said South Australia's pastoral country would be among the regions targeted.  "We know that there are good connections with Rotary through that station country," he said.
"It is a long way from Merty Merty Station down to Port Augusta and then be faced with a trip home again after a Rotary Club meeting.  "So an e-club will suit them very, very well."
The new club will not be restricted to locals.
"I have a daughter who lives in London, she could very well become a member of the e-club along with her group of friends," Mr Campbell said. "So all of a sudden we've got a pocket in London."
