Governor 2009/2010 PDG Alun Hughes & Vicky

Alun was born in Guildford, Surrey, England during the later part of world war two and completed his education in 1959 when he commenced his career in the motor industry as a motor mechanic apprentice. His family migrated to Adelaide in April 1962 where he finalised his training. He met his wife Vicky, who was also born in England, when she was nursing at the RoyalAdelaideHospital; after marrying 18 months later they moved to LeighCreek working for ETSA for four years. Alun was in the maintenance workshops and Vicky in the local hospital. They now have 11 children (9 boys and 2 girls). They both became Australian citizens in 1973. Alun undertook part time evening studies and gained certificates in workshop Management at TAFE, and later business management with Business SA. He has held management roles in the automotive industry since 1971. In 1983 Alun joined the Royal Automobile Association of SA where he is still employed. During this time he has held many positions associated with the provision and management of technical advice and vehicle inspections. He has been a member of the Institute of Automotive Engineers since 1973. Alun has served the community extensively serving on the Salisbury High School Governing Council for 26 years, 16 of those years as Chair and was presented with Certificate of Appreciation for 25 years Service in 2006 by the State Minister of Education. Alun was a leader, Branch Governor and District Commissioner in the Anglican Boys Society for 21 years, is a Justice of the Peace in South Australia and has been a Red Cross blood donor since 1964. He was invited to join and is still a member of the Rotary Club of Elizabeth in 1989 where he has held most positions including Club President in 1998/9 and 2001/2. His club awarded him a Paul Harris fellow in 1999 for services to youth. He served on the district RYLA/RYPEN Committee for 10 years, seven of those as Committee Chair. He was Rotary Assistant Governor of Group 4 during 2005/6 and has been District Vocational Coordinator during 2006/7 and 2007/8. He looks forward to serving the District in his new role as District Governor. Alun's hobbies are motor sport, particularly F1, the Crows, his family, particularly his grand children, and his commitment to Rotary and his community.
